Academic Foundations

Eastern Sun Academy’s academic content areas include Science, Math, Language Arts, Social Studies/ Humanities, Chinese, Visual and Performance Arts, Embodiment and Contemplative Practices.  Within each of these areas students are offered the necessary knowledge and skills to excel, as well as the foundations for deeper understanding which are expressed in Eastern Sun Academy’s five guiding principles.

Offering both a contemplative and inquiry based curriculum, Eastern Sun Academy challenges students to create a personal and interactive relationship with all areas of academic study.  Through the Three Journeys model of Intelligence, Compassion, and Confidence teachers guide students toward the development of their own intelligence, compassion, and confidence within each area of study.  Offering a curriculum that is comprehensive and adaptable, our goal is for all students to experience themselves as mathematicians, readers, speakers, artists, scientists, writers, etc. who are fully capable of contributing to and benefiting this world.

Eastern Sun Academy is fortunate to be included as a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IB PYP) for the 2009-2010 school year.  The IB Program is a highly respected, internationally implemented curriculum framework that shares Eastern Sun Academy’s values and academic goals, while offering a wide network of support and resources.  The IB PYP is an inquiry-based program that encourages personal responsibility, international mindedness, and academic success.

Eastern Sun Academy is a candidate school* for the Primary Years Programme. We are pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that Eastern Sun Academy believes is important for our students.

*Only schools authorized by the International Baccalaureate (IB) as IB World Schools can offer any of its three academic programmes: the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), or the IB Diploma Programme. Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be
